Francois de La Rochefoucauld

Quote:  "On ne donne rien si liberalement que ses conseils."

Synopsis:  The ultimate quotation book . . . or a collection of some of the maxims from the pen of La Rochefoucauld.  The topics broadly cover the general themes of vanity, jealousy, love, selfishness, justice, praise, hope, hypocrisy, and integrity.

Reader's Response: The genius in La Rochefoucauld's work lies in the uniting of brevity, clarity, fulness of meaning and point.  Although the maxims tend to be a bit sardonic, they are not dark epigrams, but realistic, if cynical platitudes; they are concise, candid sermons on the broad facets of human nature.

I love these maxims because I think they can apply to society at any given point in time. I found myself agreeing with a lot of his statements. I have read some before and I don't remember finding them particularly pessimistic but the selection in this book was a bit pessimistic yet and still I loved them ha.

I found La Rochefoucauld's writing to be very captivating. He was very brave and bold in many of the statements he made. I found many to be very true and applicable to our day and time.

He was a little pessimistic, but he really made the point he was trying to get accross. They were very ingenious, and well thought out. I agree that many of them are still applicable in out day and time. I really liked it.

I love that he was so ok with being pessimistic. I didn't agree with all of the maximes, but it takes a pessimistic eye to be able to pick up on and articulate a lot of the observations that I found very true, so I appreciate him for that.
